Southern Grounds Coffee Co. wasn’t created in a corporate boardroom or dreamed up by marketing experts. It started the same way a lot of good Southern ideas do—over a cup of coffee and a hard day’s work.

For years, offshore oilfield crews have relied on coffee to get through long shifts, early mornings, rough weather, and endless hours on the job. Like many workers, we spent plenty of mornings drinking whatever coffee happened to be available in the breakroom.

Some cups were good.

Most weren’t.

Eventually, one offshore worker started bringing better coffee to the crew. Before long, coworkers were asking what he brought, where he got it, and whether he had any extra.

What started as sharing coffee quickly became a simple idea:
